Oooh, you saw the Babadook! How was that? I was tempted, but I get so wigged out at gory stuff that most horror movies are sort of crap shoots. Also, do you ever read Hawkeye? I’ve fallen out of the habit of reading graphic novels, but that one seems amusing.

It’s definitely not gory. Not in the slightest. It’s one of those movies that has a solid story that stands alone outside of the horror elements. Definitely give it a go. It’s wonderfully creepy.
I’ve got the first volume of the HAWKEYE hardcover, but haven’t gotten to it…. yet. I hear wonderful things about it, though!

Hey there. Is the SHIELD comic worth reading? I like the show well enough (and the author, Mark Waid), but I’ve heard nothing about the comic.
And what did you think of Agent Carter? It wasn’t a perfect season, but I found it to be a real strong first outing. I hope we get a second season. I need more adventures with Peggy and Jarvis!

Issue #1 was a bit overwhelming and confusing. Issue #2 was adorable, as it starred Ms. Marvel. My understanding is that each issue is a kind of standalone adventure, so I’ve dropped the title from my pull list and will focus on the issues that I’m interested in.
Peggy Carter is my hero. Loved that show! It definitely wasn’t perfect, but I hope it gets a second season. 🙂

Thanks for the info on the SHIELD comic. i think I might check it out in trade from the library, but it doesn’t look like something worth purchasing every issue.

Congratulations on getting caught up up on your comics!
I got lots of reading done this month, including making progress on my Hugo reading. I am clearly not going to have enough time to get everything read that I want to read, but that is the nature of the nomination process.
New books read:
1. Sleeping Arrangements, by Madeleine Wickham. 3 stars. Read for my local book club. I had no problems with this book, but it is just not something I would choose to read on my own.
2. The Just City, by Jo Walton. 4 stars. A novel about Plato and the nature of consent. It’s a very thinky book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
3. Karen Memory, by Elizabeth Bear. 4 stars. A much lighter, quicker read than is typical of Bear. I’m hoping that this is the book that that really expands her audience. It was really delightful.
4. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. 4 stars. A really thought-provoking and action-inspiring book. Mount TBR book 2/12. Non-fiction book 2/6.
5. Trade Me, by Courtney Milan. 4 stars. Contemporary Romance.
6. Steles of the Sky, by Elizabeth Bear. 5 stars. A really awesome conclusion to her trilogy. Mount TBR 3/12.
7.Annihilation, by Jeff Vandermeer. 4 stars. I am really sensitive, in a negative way, to horror tropes, and this book was not really for me because of it’s use of those tropes. I can totally see that it is well written and I did enjoy it, but it is not aimed at me.
8. The Presidents Gather, by Eric Dale Ebinger. 2 stars. My local book club keeps picking self-published books by local authors, and I don’t really like that. This book is not horrible. The basic premise is that all the US Presidents become ghosts after death and can affect what happens in modern-day America. The action of the book happens around 9/11, and you hear all the previous presidents discussing events. The book does not really have a plot though, and while he generally kept from getting too partisan, there were times it was really clear the author and I are on opposite ends of the political spectrum, which did not help my opinion of the book. He is coming to our book club meeting this coming Friday. We’ll see how it goes.
Novellas:
1. Unlocked, an Oral History of Haden’s Syndrome, by John Scalzi. 4 stars. Read as part of The best from Tor.com, which I am working my way through.
2. The Awakened Kingdom, by NK Jemisin. 4 stars.

I’m sorry the Vandermeer didn’t work for you, as it’s a delightfully creepy read, but that’s the way of the beast! Thanks for the recommendation on the latest Bear novel… I’ve been eyeing that one, but feel guilty about picking it up since I haven’t yet read the last two in her latest trilogy.
